Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was heading to Morocco on Wednesday for a two-day visit that is to include meetings with King Mohammed VI, Moroccan government officials said.
Abbas was to arrive in Casablanca from Amman, Jordan, on Wednesday evening and stay through Friday, the officials said. No other details of the visit were released.
Abbas underlined "the historic role Morocco has always played in the service of the Palestinian cause" in an interview Wednesday with the Moroccan state news agency MAP.
Morocco's government supported the Arab-Israel peace process from the earliest stages. Mohammed's father, the late King Hassan II, welcomed Israeli leaders for negotiations, and the kingdom was the venue for the secret talks that led to Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem in 1977.
