Hamas and Fatah supporters scuffled during an election campaign at a West Bank university Sunday, leaving more than a dozen students hurt, officials and medics said. Around 5,000 students assembled Sunday at the Al Quds University campus on the outskirts of Jerusalem for a day of campaigning, ahead of Monday's student council election. Verbal arguments between supporters of Hamas and Fatah spilled over into violence, with some students hitting each other with fists, flag poles and plastic chairs, witnesses said. More than a dozen students suffered minor injuries, medics said. Student council elections at Palestinian universities are considered an important gauge of the popular support for rivals Hamas and Fatah, which established a Palestinian unity government in March. The outgoing student council at Al Quds is controlled by Fatah.
