Egyptian border guards shot dead two Sudanese migrants trying to cross illegally into Israel early Tuesday, an Egyptian hospital official said. Imad Kharboush, head of the Northern Sinai ambulance department, said the shots were fired as a group of Sudanese tried to get over barbed wire south of the Rafah border crossing. The official said a third Sudanese, Yahia Abu Bakr, was slightly wounded in the shooting. Kharboush said the two killed had no documents on them but that the wounded man identified them as Sudanese who were his friends. Hundreds of Africans seeking political asylum and jobs try to illegally cross from Egypt into Israel every year.
