Egypt rebukes EU parliament for resolution critical of rights record

Egyptian officials protested a decision by the European Union parliament Thursday to pass a resolution critical of Egypt's human rights record. The resolution said Egypt's crackdown on non-governmental organizations and human rights defenders violated international conventions signed and ratified by the country. "The resolution reveals shameful ignorance of Egypt's situation, how to deal with it and the political, economic and social reforms and developments that took place in Egypt, during the past years," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit told reporters Thursday.
