Egyptian troops alert over fears of new Hamas attempts to breach border

Egyptian troops were on a high state of alert in the town of Rafah on the border with Gaza following reports that Hamas may attempt to forcibly reopen the border, a security official said. Some thousand troops were on alert in the city following intelligence that Hamas were preparing to bulldoze the rebuilt border wall and blow up the main crossing gate with mines, the official added. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. The warning comes after Hamas politician Khalil al-Haya on Tuesday described the situation in Gaza as "no longer bearable" and renewed threats to breach the border.
