President Tony Saca said El Salvador will send its 11th contingent of troops to Iraq this month.
The 280 troops will replace soldiers carrying out humanitarian and reconstruction work in Kut, a city south of Baghdad.
Saca has sent troops to Iraq since 2003. El Salvador is currently the only Latin American country with a military presence in Baghdad.
Saca has been under opposition pressure to withdraw the Central American country's troops from Iraq. But he said Sunday the soldiers would stay until the Iraqi military is ready to take over security responsibilities.
Five Salvadoran soldiers have been killed in Iraq.
