The Obama administration on Friday dispatched a Treasury Department official to Israel for meetings in Jerusalem regarding the Iranian nuclear deal, Israel Radio reported.
Adam J. Szubin, the acting undersecretary of treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, will remain in Israel over the weekend for meetings with Israeli officials, the administration announced.
Szubin will stress to his Israeli hosts the administration's commitment to bolstering defense cooperation with Jerusalem, particularly as it relates to deterring pro-Iranian terrorist elements and others who wish to destabilize the region.
The treasury official is due to meet with Foreign Ministry director-general Dore Gold, National Security Adviser Yossi Cohen, and Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz.
Szubin is important since he is the top official who is the most well-versed in the details of the sanctions regime that has been imposed on Iran. He is also reported to have taken a substantial part in the nuclear negotiations with Iran.
