A suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi military checkpoint Thursday near a square in a predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood in central Baghdad, killing at least three people and wounding five, police said.
The blast occurred just after 3 p.m. near the Kahramana Square not far from the French Embassy, sending a huge plume of black smoke rising above the French and European Union flags atop the building.
The driver exploded his car at a checkpoint manned jointly by Iraqi police and soldiers, defying a major security crackdown in the capital.
