A US Army Kiowa helicopter hit by ground fire was forced to make an emergency landing near the northern city of Samarra on Thursday, a US Central Command spokesman said. The OH-58 Kiowa landed safely at 1:35 p.m. local time at a US base, Camp Brassfield-Mora, said US Air Force Capt. Matt Hasson at U.S. Central Command forward headquarters in Doha, Qatar. No one was injured, Hasson said. The Kiowa is a scout helicopter that normally carries a two-person crew.
