Says costs of such move disproportionate to current constraints; talks on core issues begin in Jerusalem.

Launching a wide-scale operation in Gaza would be imprudent and ill-advised, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said during a Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting on Monday.
"I highly recommended that we do not get tangled up in operations and costs which are disproportionate to the constraints we are facing," he said.
Olmert expressed his satisfaction with the IDF's performance in fighting terror organizations in the Gaza Strip. "I think that hundreds of dead terrorists in Gaza over the past year are a very significant loss for the terror organizations.," he said
Having said that, Olmert reiterated that in the future he might decide to approve a wide-scale operation in Gaza if he decides it was necessary.
Relating to the ongoing negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, Olmert said he was interested in trying to reach a peace agreement, although he was not sure it was possible. "I'm not sure we can reach an agreement with the Palestinians, but it is my duty to the State of Israel to try," he said.
