Police arrested more than 50 supporters of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood movement in Egypt's second-largest city of Alexandria on Saturday as Egyptians voted in runoff parliamentary elections, the Islamist group claimed.
Essam Ihab, a Brotherhood campaign worker, claimed police made the arrests outside polling stations and prevented voters from entering three polling centers to cast ballots in Alexandria, north of Cairo on the Mediterranean coast.
Many of the arrests were made before polls opened at 8 a.m. (0600GMT) in runoff elections for 122 seats that were not decided following polling on Nov. 20 for the second stage of Egypt's three-stage polls.
Police official were not immediately available for comment.
On Friday, police arrested more than 50 Brotherhood supporters in other Egyptian provinces ahead of the elections, which the banned Brotherhood has so far performed strongly in against the ruling National Democratic Party, headed by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
