Red Cross workers killed in Lebanese fighting

Two local Red Cross workers were killed Monday when they came under fire from inside a Palestinian refugee camp where the Lebanese army has been fighting al-Qaida-inspired militants holed up inside. The state-run National News Agency said the workers, identified as Boulos Maamari and Haitham Suleiman, were killed near the northern edge of the Nahr el-Bared camp when they were struck by shells from Fatah Islam militants. A third worker was also critically injured, the agency said. But hospital officials in north Lebanon gave a different account, saying the two were killed in their vehicle as they tried to escort a Muslim scholar, who has been trying to mediate an end to fighting between the Lebanese army and the militants, out of the camp's southern entrance.
