Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos made a surprise to Damascus on Saturday, Israel Radio reported. He is scheduled to meet with his Syrian counterpart, Walid Moallem, and President Bashar Assad.
Spain's defense minister, Jose Antonio Alonso, was in Lebanon to discuss the UN peacekeeping mission with Prime Minister Fuad Saniora. Alonso toured the country's south and inspected Spanish troops deployed there as part of UNIFIL. The Spanish UN contingent numbers 1,100 troops.
