UN Secretary-General expresses support for Israel-Hamas truce

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed support for Thursday's cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. In a statement released Thursday morning the secretary-general said that he hoped the truce "will both provide security and an easing of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and end rocket and mortar attacks against Israeli targets." He also expressed hope that the truce would "lead to a controlled and sustained opening of the Gaza crossings for humanitarian and commercial purposes." The statement also encouraged both sides to act with "care and responsibility" to ensure the cease-fire is upheld, and congratulated Egypt, who brokered the agreement, on its "its persistent efforts to achieve calm"
