The United States dismissed the reported killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as unreasonable and unreliable early Monday morning.
Several news outlets, including The Jerusalem Post reported of the possibility that Zarqawi may have died Sunday night during a battle between American forces and Iraqi insurgents.
Al-Zarqawi is the leading figure of al-Qaida in Iraq and has taken responsibility for the triple bombing in Amman, Jordan on November 9 that killed 58 civilians. After riots protesting the terrorist bombing erupted in the kingdom his Jordanian family disowned him. Al-Zarqawi noted that he did not intend to kill Muslims in the attack.
Iraqi police reported that eight rebels were killed in the battles in Mosul Sunday, according to Israel Radio.
