A US marine was killed in combat operations in Iraq's western Al-Anbar province, the military said Thursday. The solider, assigned to the Multi-National Force-West, was killed Wednesday during fighting in an area considered one of the Sunni militant strongholds. The US military statement said the soldier's name was withheld pending notification of relatives. At least 3,133 members of the US military have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
