The United States is reportedly putting pressure on Fatah leaders as well as other potential opposition movements in the Palestinian Authority to refuse to participate in a Hamas-led government. Palestinian sources said that Washington even warned them that the US will cut off all relations with them if they enter the government that Hamas is currently trying to form. The British newspaper the Financial Times reported Saturday that the US is interested in seeing Hamas tackling the difficult task of running the government alone, with the hope that it will then take full responsibility for its expected failure in doing so. On Friday, the EU announced that it was stopping financial aid to the PA is Hamas refuses to disarm and cease all terror activities. "We will not fund the new Hamas-led government if it does not make a full obligation to peace," said the EU's Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner. In response, the PA Minister of the Economy said "We are going broke, the world cannot abandon us." In an interview with the US newspaper the New York Times, the Palestinian minister said that it is not in the interest of Israel or the world for public services for Palestinians to collapse. Jibril Rajoub, a senior leader in the Fatah movement, emphasized to an interviewer that the Palestinian security forces must be preserved and that they must receive their salaries so that chaos will not increase in the PA.
