Betar Jerusalem is expected to announce the signing of French coach Luis Fernandez on Wednesday afternoon in a joint press conference with owner Arkadi Gaydamak. Fernandez, who until last week was coaching in Qatar, told French media: "All the terms have been agreed with Betar, we will announce everything in the press conference." Fernandez and Gaydamak will arrive in Israel on Wednesday morning for the announcement, which is set to take place during the afternoon Betar spokesman Lior May told The Jerusalem Post. According to reports, the two met for over three hours on Tuesday in Moscow, where they agreed to terms. Betar's current coaches, Dutchman Ton Caanen and Guy Azuri, are expected to continue with the team under the direction of Fernandez, but it is still unclear what positions they will occupy. Fernandez, 46, was one of the stars of the French national team that won the European Championships in 1984. The former midfielder also played in two World Cups, losing twice, in '82 and '86 to Germany in the semifinals. The highlight of his coaching career has been guiding Paris Saint Germain to the European Cup Winners Cup title in 1996. In addition, Fernandez coached Spanish clubs Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol of Barcelona. He decided to step down from Alrayyan of Qatar last week, leading to the possibility of his arrival at Betar.
