Roy Steinberg won his third straight Rolex Israel Amateur Open Championship at the Caesarea Golf Club, organized by the Israel Golf Federation. Steinberg is a 17-year-old from Caesarea who studies at the Golf Academy in Florida. Cynthia Lawrence of Britain came in first place in the ladies' event, Laurie Bean is the seniors' champion and Asaf Cohen, a 13-year-old from nearby Or Akiva, was declared youth champion. Oren Gary, an Israeli living in Florida, won the professional competition, which was held at the same time. During the competition, participants also attempted a hole-in-one at the 169-meter hole No. 10. Anyone succeeding would have received a NIS 100,000 Rolex watch, but none of the golfers were up to the task. About 200 golfers from 11 countries - Israel, the United States, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Cyprus, Japan, South Africa, Czech Republic, Turkey and China - took part in the championships.
