Israel is guaranteed at least one tennis medal from the Paralympic Quad wheelchair competitions after Noam Gershony and Shraga Weinberg booked a showdown against each other in the semifinals of the singles tournament on Tuesday.

Gershony, who won the French Open at Roland Garros earlier this year, defeated American Bryan Barten 6-1, 6-1 in 45 minutes, while Weinberg beat Peter Norfolk 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 after two hours and 16 minutes.

“I expected a very tough match,” said Weinberg. “I’m very, very happy. I couldn’t be happier to defeat him in front of his home crowd.”

The winner of the semifinal between Gershony and Weinberg will play the winner of the match between Americans David Wagner and Nicholas Taylor.

The losers will battle for the bronze medal.

Gershony and Weinberg will also be looking to scale the podium in the doubles tournament after falling to defending champions Taylor and Wagner in the semis.

The Israeli duo will play Japan’s Shota Kawano and Mitsuteru Moroishi for the bronze medal.
