Niki Palli failed to advance to the Olympic high jump final on Sunday, clearing just 2.20 meters in Beijing.
Had the 21-year-old Israeli jumped 2.25m with his first attempt, five centimeters less than his career best, he would have qualified for Tuesday's final, but he was no where near doing so in any of his three tries.
"After clearing 2.20m my foot started to hurt," said Palli. "The same thing happened to me last week in training, but we treated it and everything seemed to be fine."
Palli, how tied for 21st position overall, cleared 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.20m with his first attempts, but things went sour from there.
"It's a shame the competition had to end in this way," Palli said. "I was in excellent shape and felt like I could clear 2.29m tonight. I'm disappointed because I know what I'm capable of."
