A day after notifying Neven Spahija that he will not be continuing as coach of the club, Maccabi Tel Aviv decided on Monday to appoint Oded Katash as the team's coach and Tzvika Sherf as general manager. The 32-year-old Katash, one of the greatest players in Maccabi history, retired in 2004 after being plagued with knee injuries. The former guard played for the team between 1995 and 1999 before leaving for Greek giant Panathinaikos. In 2000 he helped Panathinaikos to the European Championship, scoring a crucial three-pointer in the closing stages of the title game against Maccabi. Katash, who was appointed coach of Hapoel Galil Elyon Golan in 2005, led the team to the BSL Final Four this season and impressed Tel Aviv owners by pushing Maccabi all the way in the semifinals of the event. Sherf, 55, coached Tel Aviv for 10 seasons during the 80's and 90's, leading the team to 10 Israeli championships. Sherf, who is currently the coach of the Israel national team, also guided Maccabi to two European finals and coached top sides in Greece, France and Russia.
