Pe'er through to historic doubles semi

Shahar Pe'er advanced to the semifinals of a Grand Slam doubles tournament for the first time in her career on Tuesday in Melbourne. The Israeli and her Belarusian partner Victoria Azarenka thrashed No. 13 seeds Janette Husarova and Flavia Pennetta 6-1, 6-1 in a mere 49 minutes in the last eight of the Australian Open. Pe'er and Azarenka converted five of their nine break points on Tuesday, with Husarova and Pennetta failing to reach a single break point. In the last four on Wednesday, the Israeli/Belarusian duo, which is seeded 12th, will face No. 7 seeds Zi Yan and Jie Zheng who defeated Serena and Venus Williams 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Also Wednesday, Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich, who are seeded eighth in Melbourne, face Frenchmen Marc Gicquel and Fabrice Santoro in the men's doubles quarterfinals. Ram will also be in action in the mixed doubles on Wednesday, teaming-up with Nathalie Dechy to play against Yung-Jan Chan and Eric Butorac in a last eight encounter.
