In the shadow of the French Open women's final, Anna Smashnova claimed the title Saturday at the ITF challenger-level event in Prostejov, Cxech Republic.
Smashnova, who hadn't competed in a challenger since the end of the 2001 season, was awarded the title when her opponent in the final, Italy's Romina Oprandi (ranked 96), withdrew with a stomach ailment.
The victory helped lessen the disappointment after Smashnova, who at 50 is the second ranked Israeli after Shahar Pe'er, lost last week in the opening round at Roland Garros.
The title is her seventh on the ITF circuit, to go along with 11 on the WTA Tour.
