Swimming: Barnea reaches semifinal

Guy Barnea finished the 50 meter backstroke in 15th position overall after clocking a time of 26.45 seconds in Saturday's semifinal. The 20-year-old reached the last 16 after finishing the morning heats in 26.24 seconds. Despite reaching the semis, Barnea still has not met the Olympic Committee of Israel criteria for the 2008 Beijing Games due to the fact that the 50m backstroke is not an Olympic event. Itai Chammah clocked a time of 26.67 seconds in the heats and finished in 26th position. On Friday, Barnea set a new Israeli record in the 100m butterfly and finished in 36th place after clocking a time of 54.25 seconds. Anya Gostomelsky also recorded a new Israeli record on Friday, finishing the 200m backstroke in 2 minutes 14.92 seconds, placing her in 24th position overall. Amit Ivri finished the 50m butterfly in 31st with a time of 28.10 seconds. Shai Livnat clocked a time of 24.03 seconds in the 50m freestyle, which placed him 64th.• Allon Sinai contributed to this report.
