Israel's Davis Cup team will learn on Tuesday which eight opponents it could face in a September World Group playoff. The International Tennis Federation will publish its updated nation rankings on Tuesday and the 16 teams that have reached the World Group playoffs will be split into seeded and unseeded sides. Israel, which will be unseeded based on its recent Davis Cup record, booked its place in the playoffs by defeating Italy 3-2 over the weekend at the Ramat Hasharon Tennis Center. After taking an unsurmountable 3-0 lead on Saturday, Israel lost two singles matches on Sunday. Andreas Seppi (No. 91 in the ATP singles rankings) defeated Noam Okun (171) 7-6(4), 7-6(4), Simone Bolelli (111) beat and Dudi Sela (203) 7-5, 6-3. Israel, which last played in a World Group playoff in 1998, will be drawn its playoff opponent on Wednesday and the tie is scheduled for the weekend of September 21-23. Among the possible opponents are Roger Federer's Switzerland, Lleyton Hewitt's Australia and Great Britain, which Israel defeated in a Davis Cup tie at Eastbourne last year.
