Shahar Pe'er will face world No. 3 Jelena Jankovic in the second round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart after getting the better of Italian Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday.
The Israeli, who is ranked No. 16 in the world, defeated Schiavone (28) 6-1, 7-6 (6) in a one hour and 34 minute first round encounter.
Pe'er raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and held serve in the seventh game to clinch the set.
The second set was far closer, with Pe'er breaking in the first game, but Schiavone fighting back to tie the score. The set was eventually decided on a tiebreak and Pe'er completed the win on her second match point.
In other matches, Agnieszka Radwanska rallied to spoil Marion Bartoli's 23rd birthday by beating the Wimbledon runner-up 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Polish teenager, who has won one title this year, dominated the last two sets after quickly dropping the first.
Eight of the top 10 players are taking part in the indoor event, with only Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams absent.
Also on Tuesday, Dudi Sela (109) took another significant step to becoming a top 100 player, defeating German Simon Stadler (211) 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of the AIG Open in Tokyo.
The 22-year-old Israeli, who was playing in his first match since defeating world No. 6 Fernando Gonzalez in Israel's Davis Cup tie against Chile , will next face one of tennis' raising stars, Juan Martin Del Potro (51).
The key to Sela's win on Tuesday was his ability to break Stadler at exactly the right moment. Sela claimed a break of serve in the 10th game of the match to clinch the first set and broke once more in the 12th game of the second set to wrap-up his first ever win in a non-Grand Slam ATP tournament.
