WASHINGTON -- Media bias is fueling Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign and is burning Republicans, Donald Trump Jr. said on Wednesday, using a Holocaust reference to drive home his point.
Speaking to Philadelphia Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, the Republican presidential nominee's eldest son said that his father was held to a different standard from that of his rival.
"The media has been her number one surrogate in this," Trump Jr. said. "Without the media, this wouldn’t even be a contest, but the media has built her up. They’ve let he slide on every indiscrepancy [sic], on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out of this thing. If Republicans were doing that, they’d be warming up the gas chamber right now."
He said that the man who is currently running for president is the authentic Donald Trump– the man he has always known his father to be.
“He’s always going to be himself and he’s always been that way," Trump Jr. said. "He really understands now the nuances between business and politics, in terms of delivery and in terms of being out there. I think he’s always been the same guy. He’s always cared about all people."
The National Jewish Democratic Council issued a statement of condemnation on Thursday, as did Rep. Eliot Engel (D-New York), ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “Everybody knows to what Donald Jr. was referring when he mentioned ‘a gas chamber,’ and there’s only one word for it: deplorable.”
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, also weighed in on Thursday afternoon, calling the comment "out of line" and for Trump Jr. to retract the statement.
