For the fifth year, the Caesarea Nights outdoor arts series - a combination of music and movies under the stars - will be held at the city's ancient port. Over the festival's first four years, the main focus was on the outdoor movie screenings, and the musical component was more of a side note. This year is set to be a major departure, with music taking equal billing.
Taking place on three consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning this week, each night of the festival will focus on a theme where music and cinema meet. The first Wednesday is titled "Musical Tonight" and is based on the American musical. Sasi Keshet and Keren Hadar, along with a big band, will perform songs from such hits as Porgy and Bess, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Carmen Jones and Man of LaMancha. The night's movie is the 1951 classic Singin' in the Rain, starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. All Caesarea Nights movies will be shown on an over-sized outdoor screen.
July 19 explores the '60s and '70s. Israeli rock stars Danny Sanderson and Hemi Rodner are set to team up for the night's performance, a tribute to classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll. The program includes songs by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and others. The movie Hair follows. Directed by Milos Forman and starring John Savage, Treat Williams and Beverly D'Angelo, the 1979 film is the screen adaptation of the emblematic tongue-in-cheek '60s hippie opus.
"With a Brazilian-Cuban Beat," on July 26, marks Keren Hadar's return to the Caesarean stage, along with the Israeli-Brazilian musical phenomenon Elisete Ritter. Accompanied by the Shachar Band, the two will perform the music of some of Brazil's greatest composers, including Heitor Villa-Lobos, Dorival Caymmi and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Following the Latin-infused performance, Wim Wanders' Buenna Vista Social Club will be screened. The movie tells the story of a group of elderly Cuban musicians and their upbeat music against the backdrop of an underdeveloped Cuba.
In addition to music and screenings, Caesarea's many archeological sites (including Herod's port) will be open for exploration and added atmosphere. A number of local restaurants and cafes will set up special outdoor locations in addition to those that already exist on Caesarea's beach and port, offering a variety of food and drink. The complex will open to the public each Wednesday at 7 p.m., with the musical performances scheduled for 8:30 and the films starting an hour later. Tickets cost NIS 85 per evening and include parking.
