The Negev town of Dimona has a new theater company, and will eventually have a new building to work in. The construction is part of the CultureLab project, funded by the Mifal Hapayis Arts and Culture Council, which seeks to promote creativity in the performing arts to jumpstart life in the periphery.
The Dimona Theater's first production, opening at the Dimona Auditorium on July 14, will be The Best of Humanity, a play about the effects of war created over the past year by the company's six actors and directors Toby Dikman and Doron Tavori. In it, a famous violinist becomes a soldier in a "just war," and he loses both his humanity and his ability to play.
The CultureLab project began last year and will provide around NIS 3 million over the next few years to artists and other bodies seeking to establish creative institutions away from the center of the country.
