Theater Review: Licidei Clown Theater

There is no spoken word, but there are many visual sight gags and fairly predictable circus clown tricks.

Israel Festival The Family Licidei Clown Theater Sherover Hall, Jerusalem June 15 The audience of mostly kids wriggles expectantly as a very, very "pregnant" mother comes through the audience onto the stage, takes down her laundry and waters her plants. The audience takes down the onstage stage curtain to reveal her four bratty kids tormenting their drunken dad, and The Family show is underway. There is no spoken word, but there are many visual sight gags and fairly predictable circus clown tricks. They tell the story of a family in which dad is always threatening to leave, the kids torment each other and their parents, and mom is always pregnant. This was the performance that never quite ignited. The comic turns evoked only sporadic laughter because the clowns' internal energy didn't combust. What should have been, and was designed to be, rollicking good fun was never more than amusing.
