"The honor makes me feel as if I've truly become part of the Jewish people," said veteran actress Orna Porat, one of four people to receive Keys to the City of Tel Aviv in a ceremony Sunday.
The German-born Porat, 82, was already a professional actress when she met and married Yosef Porat. Raised near Cologne, the actress returned with him to Israel in 1947, converted, and as Orna Porat, was snatched into the then-very new Cameri Theater.
Porat has won prizes galore, including the Israel Prize (1980), the Israel Theater Lifetime Achievement Prize (1997), the Prime Minister's EMET award for excellence (2005), a fistful of honorary doctorates and the Keys to the city of Cologne - a sister city to Tel Aviv - in 2004. But Porat regards as her greatest achievement the children's theater she founded in 1970 and ran for 25 years, and that is known today as the Orna Porat National Children and Youth Theater.
