The Jerusalem-based Center Stage Theater and the Tel Aviv Community Theater both have productions to brighten Hanukka.
CST presents Paul Zindel's Pulitzer Prize winning The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, with Rebecca Gillis as Beatrice Hunsdorfer - a woman who is bitter at life and struggles to make ends meet. The sun momentarily shines when shy Tillie (Rachel Beitsch) is chosen to represent her high-school at a science fair, but then Ruth (Ronit Rosenfeld) hurls thunderbolts and the riven family must try to rebuild. The show will play at Mercaz HaMagshimim on December 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 29, and 31.

For the unitiated, the Panto, as it's called, is an irreverent romp complete with outrageous jokes, song, dance, romance and slapstick through the fairytale world. It's traditionally put on at Christmas time and appeals to adults as well as kids. Oh yes, and the hero is always played by a girl and the inevitable Dame by a man, in this case TACT veteran Albert Levy who play's Aladdin's long-suffering Mum, the Widow Twankey.
TACT's Aladdin is set in China, the original music is by Daniel Schwartzman, the choreography by Yardena Shapiro and the director is Madeleine Mordecai. The show opens at Tel Aviv's Yad Lebanim December 24-31.
