The Emmys were presented for the film Death in Gaza, a documentary about Palestinian children in Israel-controlled Gaza.

The American television industry handed out its highest awards Sunday night, with CBS's Everybody Loves Raymond winning the comedy award and ABC's Lost taking the prize for top drama.
The Television Academy of Arts and Sciences gave out its Creative Arts Emmys the previous Sunday, with a documentary about Palestinian children in Israel-controlled Gaza taking awards for cinematography, direction, and Excellent Merit in Non-Fiction Programming.
Death in Gaza director James Miller, 34 at the time of filming, was shot dead by an Israeli soldier while working on the film, and his family is taking civil action against Israel, which it says did not adequately investigate the circumstances of the shooting or punish the officer responsible. The film, which aired in the United States on the HBO cable channel, was originally intended to depict the conflict from an Israeli viewpoint as well, but filming was stopped after Miller's death in May 2003. Death in Gaza had previously won a BAFTA television award in Miller's native England, and the Emmy Awards came on the same day that Israel completed its withdrawal from Gaza.
Also receiving a Creative Arts Emmy was an episode of Nick News With Linda Ellerbee entitled "Never Again? From the Holocaust to the Sudan." The show, which appeared on the Nickelodeon cable network, shared the prize for best children's program.
