Jazz and world

The Avi Leibovitch Quintet kick off the Thursday evening jazz series this week at Jerusalem's Mishkenot Sha'aninim.

Following the success of last year's low-priced summer jazz concert series at Jerusalem's Mishkenot Sha'aninim, organizers have extended this year's program to include a series of world music performances. Taking place on the roof of the historical compound, the shows provide an opportunity to enjoy a variety of musical performaces against the idyllic backdrop of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood across from the walls of the Old City. The Avi Leibovitch Quintet kick off the Thursday evening jazz series this week, with " Worlds of Jazz," a show of Middle Eastern rhythms combined with motifs drawn from sources as diverse as drum & bass to classical funk. The following Thursday, July 6, the Danny Saguy Quintet pays tribute to the Jerusalem International Film Festival with a special free concert entitled " Jazz Tunes From the Movies." Promising young Israeli musicians Omer Klein and Haggai Cohen Milo bring the sounds of their current country of residence to Jerusalem at July 13's "Funky Jazz from the USA " performance. The US influence also features at the "Flowing jazz with Dynamic Groove" concert on July 20. The "Sharp 5" band will play Israeli music impacted by the New York Jazz scene. On July 27, the Albert Berger Trio combine classical and ethnic sounds for a "Contemporary Israeli Jazz" concert. Four friends from Tel Aviv are scheduled to perform at the first of the Friday world music concert this afternoon, as their recently formed band "The Fans" fuse funky melodies and ironic lyrics for a performance entitled " Pure and Kicking Rock'n Roll." The Friday series continues on July 7 with " On the Road," featuring Greek music from the Yaron Enosh Studio. Popular funk band Funk'n'stein plays on July 14, and on July 21 the Jerusalem-based band Coolooloosh plays hip hop and instrumental music together with rapper Rebel Sun. The season rounds off with a concert by virtuoso saxophonist and composer Tevet Sela who will performing ethnic jazz. All the Thursday evening concerts take place at 7:30 p.m., except for the July 6 Danny Saguy Quintet performance which begins at 5. The Friday afternoon concerts take place at 4:30.
