Pituresque Mishkenot Sha'ananim brings back its ease-into-Shabbat, late Friday concerts starting this afternoon. Shannan Streett of Hebrew hip-hop band Hadag Nahash launches this summer's series on the Yemin Moshe rooftop and its dazzling backdrop of the Old City. For this show he'll be performing songs from his solo album, A Passing Bolt of Light, which he co-wrote with jazz trombonist Avi Leibovich.
Leibovich himself brings his own 13-member orchestra to the eight-Friday series on August 10. While admission usually costs NIS 30, Leibovich's concert - which mixes jazz with salsa, funk, folklore, Israeli and world music - will be part of the Jerusalem Foundation's "Free in the Summer" events.
Next week (July 13), the Coolooloosh band will be playing their Eastern-influenced fusion of funk, hip-hop, and soul. Now that their African-American soloist, Rebel Sun, has finally gained full Israeli citizenship after years of bureaucratic struggle, Coolooloosh is revitalized and ready to introduce a new groovy sound.
The series line-up continues with the Danny Saguy Quintet (July 20), covering jazz standards on vocals, piano, drums, saxophone and bass. They'll be followed on July 27 with Hamu-Mehamem, a band which sets its texts to a vibrant mix of rock-pop, jazz, folk, and Balkan rhythms.
August features The Apples (funk, jazz, and groove) and the Kimbombo ensemble of South American and Israeli musicians playing Buena Vista hits, Cuban classics, Latin jazz and Hebrew songs enhanced by original Latin adaptations.
Slutzki's Tromboniere - four trombones, accompanied by drums and contrabass - sign off the series on August 24
