This year's Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat was supposed to be a celebratory affair, marking the 20th year the festival has been held.
An all-star international roster of jazz and world music artists had already been released before organizers announced last week that the festival would be shortened because of a flurry of cancellations by foreign artists due to fighting in northern Israel. The festival, which was to have run for four days, will now take place over three days between August 28 and 30.
One of the big foreign acts not to have pulled out is a trio led by Cuban-born pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Rubalcaba's band also includes compatriot drummer Ignacio Berroa, who performed in May's Jerusalem Jazz Festival. There are five more foreign bands in the three-day program, including The Mingus Dynasty Band and the Latin Groove ensemble from Cuba. Ten Israeli artists will also perform.
