Located next to the YMCA center, Pisces is an elegant kosher restaurant that has recently reopened after being closed for many months. Executive chef Noam Zipori, who has many years of experience in kosher cooking, created a new menu for Pisces, adding his personal touch to the dishes. "I've formed a menu where everyone can find something he likes," says Zipori. "We're here to please our diners." Beige walls complement the arched windows of this modern-style restaurant, and simple but elegant chandeliers hang from the ceiling. Although it is in the heart of the capital, this comfortable eatery makes patrons feel as if they are in a quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The menu, which includes an attractive business-lunch option, is not extensive, but it comprises an interesting selection that could please any palate - from such traditional favorites as grilled salmon in citrus vinaigrette (NIS 74), eggplant ravioli with pine nuts and pesto (NIS 68) to specialties like a duet of filet mignon and goose liver in green pepper sauce (NIS 109). We began our meal by trying an array of satisfying salads, which were not on the menu but arrived as part of the meal and could easily serve as a light dinner. For our main course, we first tried the entrecote steak in port and rosemary sauce (NIS 92). The meat was good but lacked dimension and the plate could have used another element - perhaps a vegetable - to add interest. The other main dish of beef filet Zipori style (NIS 99) was crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. It was vividly spiced with fresh herbs and port sauce, and served with artichoke bottoms filled with mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. For dessert we shared chocolate fudge with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce (NIS 34) which arrived a bit late and was a bit cold. This made me feel that a little more attention to detail might have improved the dining experience. But to be fair, successful desserts in a kosher meat restaurant are not always easy to find. In any case, Pisces is definitely a place to keep in mind the next time you have friends or family coming to visit. Pisces, 24 King David Street. Tel. 567-9706.
