1,000 protest mehadrin lines in the capital

Some 1,000 demonstrators gathered at Jerusalem's Paris Square on Saturday night to protest against the capital's "mehadrin", or gender-segregated buses, which are used by some haredi residents of the capital and enforce a strict seating separation between the sexes.

Carrying signs decrying the lines as "not kosher", protesters accused the government of capitulating to pressure from haredi groups and called on Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) to halt the operation of the buses.

A group of Haredi counter-demonstrators, who arrived at the rally by bus, accused the protesters of "haredi-phobia" and carried signs praising the buses.

The protest was also supported by MK Nitzan Horowitz (Meretz), who spoke at the rally, along with opposition leader Tzipi Livni, who did not attend, but said in a statement that she viewed the issue as "not only a struggle over transportation, but one over the State of Israel's character as a Jewish, democratic, and free country."
