Agriculture Ministry mass distributes rabies vaccines

The Agriculture Ministry is aiming to curb an ongoing outbreak of rabies by conducting a mass vaccine operation in the fox and jackal population.
During one operation, veterinarians distributed 400,000 bait traps in an area of 20,000 square kilometers and at a cost of NIS 4 million, in order to vaccinate the wild animals, which have also been spreading rabies to dogs.In both 2009 and 2010, there were about 50 cases of rabies identified each year, and in 2011, there were about 30 cases – mostly in the North, according to the ministry. The current operation will continue until the end of February, the ministry said.
