Algeria: 5 soldiers killed in Islamist terror attack

ALGIERS, Algeria — Security officials on Sunday announced that Islamist militants bombed a convoy of Algerian troops, killing five and injuring 10.
The officials said the troops were on an operation to clear out militants from the Kabylie region east of the capital Algiers.
When the convoy passed through the town of Zekri, militants set off a remote-controlled bomb that sent a truck flying off the roadside. The officials said Sunday that five troops aboard the truck were killed.
Algerian police and security forces face sporadic attacks from Islamist militants, including an al-Qaida offshoot that grew out of an insurgency movement that has targeted the state since the 1990s.
