Attorney General blocks pre-election appointments of new heads of police, prisons

Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein on Sunday blocked the government’s request to appoint new heads of the police and Prisons Service prior to the upcoming election.

The process for replacing the Israel Police and Prisons Service commissioners has been underway for some time and Weinstein even said that the process of vetting candidates potential legal issues had started.

However, as a matter of law and ethics for upholding public confidence in public institutions, he said no such major appointments could go through since the government is merely a caretaker and transition government.

Since the caretaker status effectively removed the voters’ backing from the government making any new major decisions preelection, Weinstein said that no changes would be allowed.

He added that the chiefs would not be stepping down before May, such that the March 17 election date, while giving little time for new appointments, made such appointments possible.
