Authorities seize stolen Egyptian sarcophagi in Old City

The Israel Antiquities Authority seized two ancient Egyptian sarcophagi that once contained mummies in a shop in the Old City of Jerusalem, it said Tuesday. The coffins were taken for examination, where it was determined they were genuine stolen artifacts and therefore impounded by the IAA.
An IAA statement said it suspects the artifacts were plundered in Egypt and then smuggled to Dubai and then on to Israel via a European country. The coffins were cut in half in order to make smuggling them easier, causing irreparable damage.
