Beersheba becomes slightly more dry, at night

If Beersheba was not already a dry city in more than one way, it added another Monday night, when drinking alcoholic beverages in public will land residents in trouble with the law. According to a local ordinance passed in Beersheba Municipality, those caught consuming alcohol between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. are liable to be fined and possibly indicted in court.
While the nighttime restriction applies to all residents, minors will be legally prohibited from consuming alcohol in public at all hours of the day and night, unless they are with their guardian or at a family event. The new law and its expected enforcement comes in the wake of a murder that took place in the city earlier this year. Gadi Veichman was murdered by a number of youths when he asked them to keep their noise level down outside his home late one night.
Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danielovich said of the new measure, "Unfortunately, I have been trying for over five years to advance legislation in the Knesset that would forbid minors from consuming alcoholic drinks, but with no success," He continued, "Almost every weekend, we are witnessing horrible events like murder, rape, traffic accidents, fights, vandalism and drowning after drinking."
He added that he hopes the Knesset passes legislation that would forbid minors from drinking alcohol, which he noted would complement laws barring the sale of alcohol to minors.
