Calls growing for Tantawi to run for Egypt presidency

Various public figures and political forces are calling on head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, to run for president, the Al-Masry Al-Youm's online English edition The Egypt Independent reported Monday.
The requests for Tantawi to run came in light of an announcement made Saturday by the Muslim Brotherhood that it would field a candidate in the presidential race, the Egypt Independent cited unnamed sources as saying.
Tantawi would be a better candidate, those supporting him said, because he would protect "protect the state’s civilian character from religion, preserve the country’s cultural and ideological diversity and protect equality for all citizens," according to the report.
In order for Tantawi to be able to run for head of state, he would need the support of 30 members of the newly elected parliament.
