China: Iran sanctions don't provide fundemental solution

BEIJING — China showed no sign Tuesday of throwing itssupport behind new sanctions against Iran following talks withBritain's foreign minister, who had hoped to persuade Beijing to join agrowing international consensus for more stringent measures.

Chinese ForeignMinister Yang Jiechi maintained that sanctions weren't the solution todisagreements over Iran's nuclear program and that more talks were theway forward.

"Sanctions do not provide a fundamental solution tothe Iranian nuclear issue. Ultimately, this issue has to beappropriately resolved through peaceful negotiations," Yang said at ajoint news conference with Britain's David Miliband following theirdiscussions in Beijing.
