China supports UN Security Council's presidential statement

China welcomed the presidential statement on the Syrian issue adopted by the United Nations Security Council Wednesday, saying the statement is a positive step toward a political settlement of the Syrian crisis. The statement announces full support to the peace efforts of Kofi Annan, the UN and Arab League joint special envoy for Syria.

Qu Xing, director of the China Institute of International Studies, believes this presidential statement marks the initial achievements made by Annan's peace efforts, and will promote political dialogue in Syria.

Qu pointed out that this statement cancels the requirement that Syria's top leader, President Bashar al-Assad, must step-down within a certain time limit, and emphasizes the respect of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the basic principles of the UN Charter.

"What China supports is in the statement, while what China has opposed is not included. What China has opposed is actually directed against the violations of the guidelines and principles of the UN Charter. Since this statement protects the UN Charter and its principles, China would definitely not object to it," said Qu.

China has made persistent mediation efforts in the past few weeks, hoping to solve the Syrian crisis peacefully. The Chinese government has sent envoys to Syria, and exchanged views with other countries. The UN Security Council presidential statement also indicates that China's efforts have gained more and more support from the international community, said Qu.
