City Hall protest decries treatment of east Jerusalemites

City Hall protest decrie

Some 40 people took part in a demonstration opposite Jerusalem's City Hall on Tuesday to protest their "deep discontent with the treatment of Palestinian residents of east Jerusalem." Using props such as cardboard homes to portray recent house evictions of east Jerusalem residents, the demonstration included a "theatrical protest", in which such evictions were re-enacted. The protest was also held to mark the one year anniversary of the election of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, whom protesters said was "not keeping his word" with regard to building rights in all parts of the capital. "House demolitions have continued, evictions are taking place and building permits are still very difficult to acquire," said one demonstrator. "We feel that Barkat has not sufficiently addressed these issues."
