Court: Chicken coop reform - only if not in battery cages

The High Court of Justice ruled earlier this week that the Agriculture Ministry could only go ahead with its pilot project for a NIS 300m. reform of chicken coops if the new coops were not battery cages. Battery cages give chickens only 550 square centimeters to stand on – less than the size of an A4 piece of paper.

Animal rights groups Anonymous, as well as Noah and Chai Meshek had petitioned for and received a stay of reform until the state met higher standards in September. The Agriculture Ministry asked that the interim injunction be lifted. However, the court ruled that while the regulations which should enable effective enforcement remained unlegislated, the injunction stood. The judges did give permission for planning and financial incentives to continue and even allowed the pilot projects to go forward – but only if the battery cages were no longer used.
