Criteria for girls seeking military exemption tightened

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation on Monday approved the tightening of criteria for females who request exemption from military service on religious grounds.
Until now, girls have had to declare that they maintain a religious lifestyle, do not travel on Shabbat and keep kosher.
With the new regulations proposed by MK Israel Hasson (Kadima), girls must now prove that they have attended a religious educational institution for at least two years and must receive approval by the same institution.
The proposal has been rejected in the past due to haredi objection.
